About this course

A 12-week NPTEL course from IIT Bombay, the July 2021 run of Concepts of Chemistry for Engineering: 77 lectures of 15 to 30 minutes plus a course introduction. Week 1 builds quantum ideas from scratch (quantum theory, Schrodinger's equation, the laws of quantum mechanics, wave functions, a free particle), and the following weeks cover the hydrogen atom, molecular orbital theory, hard and soft acids and bases, crystal field theory, magnetism and band structure, rotational, electronic and NMR spectroscopy, enthalpy and electrochemistry, intermolecular forces and real gases, and stereochemistry, before ending with organic reactions: elimination, addition, oxidation and reduction, and the synthesis of a drug molecule. It is a first-year university chemistry course, a good bridge from FSc or A Level for engineering students.
